Episode 32. We are back for another week!

Welcome back to another episode of Social Media Mastery, the newsletter designed to provide that little bit of support each week on your path to growing your audience!

Today’s topic is:

What are the three types of hooks on social media?

I love this subject!

As discussed previously (in Episode 25), hooks are the most powerful tool for consistently gaining social media views.

If you know the formula for using them, you should have no problem going viral consistently.

However…

Not many people know about the different types of hooks, and most importantly, how and when to use them.

These are the main types of hooks:

  1. Text Hooks

  2. Image Hooks

  3. Audio Hooks

Today, we’re going to discuss each one and explain how you can effectively use them within your own content.

Text Hooks

A text hook is what you might place on your image or video to make the viewer want to read or watch on.

In the example above, I used a text hook to spark curiosity within the viewers. The idea was to make them want to watch the rest of the video to find out the information in the text. As you can see, this video performed very well for me, and the text hook was a large part of that success.

If you’re reading this, clearly you want to grow on social media. My advice would be to always try to implement a text hook, because, worst-case scenario, the viewer will spend around three seconds reading and processing the text, which leads to higher video retention.

Image Hooks

Image based social media hooks, are another powerful way to spark interest from the consumer.

In the above example, I have a background image, of The Sidemen. If you don’t already know, they’re a major UK YouTube group, and using people like this as a visual hook is a great idea.

A visual or image hook can honestly be anything that grabs more attention than would be there without it. From throwing a ball in the air to showing a book you’ve just read - it can literally be anything!

Audio Hooks

Speech or audio hooks are the final vital ingredient for going viral!

Let me use an example from a MrBeast video. MrBeast could say, “I’m giving away a car.” This would be fine - but honestly, it isn’t all that exciting.

What he actually said was, “Last to leave the circle wins a $250,000 bright red Ferrari!”

Notice the difference?

The first one was bland, uninteresting, and kind of boring.

The second version added details like the price and colour of the car, and he exclaimed his point rather than just saying it. Within three seconds, the viewer now knows:
a) the concept of the video, and
b) the amazing prize for winning it.

Use this exact same formula for your own videos, within your niche.

In conclusion…

Try to use as many different types of hooks as possible within your content - the more, the merrier!

A well-made video has time and effort put into it, especially in the first five seconds. I once heard Alex Hormozi say that he puts 85% of his effort for the entire video into the first five seconds.

So, why aren’t you doing the same?
