Episode 29. Summer has officially gone :-(
Welcome back to the single greatest newsletter to ever exist (according to, well, me!). This is SMM, where I give you a little snippet into how you can become a high performer on social media.
Today’s topic is:
The best Strategy to GROW on Social Media is...
This is my favourite!
If you have just begun posting on social media, or are thinking about starting, this is the perfect episode for you.
Most people who never grow a large audience, but post fairly consistently, do so because they never actually pick a niche to hone in on.
In my opinion, the more knowledgeable in a niche you are, the higher chance of growing an audience within it you have. The best niches are ones where there isn’t already an oversaturation of content.
For example:
In the UK, everyone and their dog wants to become a Football Influencer. My podcast ‘The Nearlymen’ is in this space, and I can promise you, it is a very crowded market. The benefit of this ‘niche’ is that in fairness, there is a huge audience, who never seem to get bored of the content, but the main big fish do seem to rack up a lot of the views.
However, a creator called ‘AdamTheCCO | Sports Marketing’ found a specific niche within the football space, which, as you can guess, is marketing content. He has generated millions of views, and built over 50,000 followers, all because rather than choosing the same lane as everybody else, he found a niche, within a niche!
But how does this benefit you?
Well, if you are looking to grow your business, or personal brand, my advice would be to get very specific about the type of person you want to watch your content. If you aim for everyone, you will end up with no one.
Only once you feel you have essentially ‘reached your limit’ within a niche, should you then look to broaden out to a wider market.
A great example of this is Steven Bartlett. When he launched ‘The Diary of a CEO’, he was using his network, and sticking to a very strict - business owner only - policy. But as soon as he felt like he had maximised that niche, he started to slowly move towards more of a celebrity & science based show, which is where the show is at today. Yes, he is very clearly a ‘business owner’, but he has widened out his scope to reach a larger market.
In conclusion…
Start small. Find your people and every single day try to entice them to join your journey. Make them feel like they are part of something. The smaller the niche, the higher chance of immediate growth potential - in my humble opinion. Do not broaden out too early.
